    The Troodos Mountains

Nature & Cultural Heritage

view in scale
The Troodos massif, which stretches across the centre of Cyprus and reaches up to 1,952 metres at Mount Olympus , is truly spectacular. The rugged but easily accessible region is brimming with 12th and 15th century frescoed churches, many of which are listed in UNESCO's catalogue of world heritage. Monasteries dating from the Byzantine period dot the landscape, but the best known is that of Kykkos, built in the 12th century and magnificently restored, complete with a beautiful museum of icons. Tour the hills and you will come across winemaking villages, where small family-run wineries welcome visitors, often offering them the opportunity to sample the fruits of their labour.

The natural beauty of the area varies with the seasons. In winter, a soft blanket of snow covers the highest peaks for several weeks, saturating the soil in preparation for spring's carpet of flowers, and feeding streams that fill the island's water reservoirs. Depending on the snowfall, a number of ski lifts operate in Troodos, attracting skiers eager not to miss an opportunity to slalom down the moderate slopes.

Come summer, the cool, pine-scented mountain air offers relief from the intense inland heat. Quaint and quiet villages are transformed overnight into vibrant summer resorts, with local taverns serving wholesome local specialities. Autumn is the ideal season for hiking along the numerous trails that lead you off the beaten track. Varying in length and difficulty, these designated trails traverse the green heart of Cyprus , introducing you to the region's rich endemic flora.

A Taste of Adventure
As life becomes more hectic and centered around an urban lifestyle, the opportunity to quickly escape to the serenity and purity of a natural environment becomes increasingly rare and valuable. Excluding the short winter months, the Troodos Mountains serve as an ideal terrain for mountain biking, hiking, camping, bird watching, and nature observation in general. Compact as Cyprus is, even the most remote corners of the mountains are no more than an hour's drive from the nearest major town, making it even easier to enjoy a day of alternative recreation.
