As Cyprus is an island, it stands to reason that fishing is one of the most traditional occupations pursued by the Cypriots of old. While professional fishermen are dwindling in numbers, fishing as a hobby is on the rise, not only in the open sea, but also in the numerous rainwater reservoirs across the island where there are fishing opportunities all year round. No doubt, fishing will try your patience, but at the same time, it is regarded by many as a most relaxing, almost meditative activity. The Fisheries Department has issued a booklet for amateur anglers - and green novices - with descriptions and illustrations of the various kinds of fish you will come across in our waters.
